Chris Turak and Shawn Fluharty discuss the goals of the Booze and Cruise, You'll Lose program while Kevin Flanagan depicts a prosecuting attorney in Gold, Khourey and Turak's annual mock drunk driving victim trial.
Gold, Khourey and Turak’s “Booze and Cruise, You’ll Lose” program started in 1992. The program is supported by West Virginia Northern Community College, WTOV 9, the West Virginia State Police and the Wheeling Nailers. The Booze & Cruise, You’ll Lose assembly gives students knowledge of the consequences of drinking and driving; including bodily harm, criminal charges and financial costs. In the wake of increased prescription drug, synthetic drug and street drug use, we also take the opportunity to discuss that “booze” can be defined as “any mind-altering substance” and can result in a DUI. The program is fun-filled and fast-paced, giving students the opportunity to interact with a personal injury attorney from our Moundsville, WV law firm, a West Virginia State Highway Patrolman, players from the Wheeling Nailers hockey team and a personality from WTOV-9 News. The program is designed to educate students on the dangers of impaired driving. Taking place during high school prom and graduation season, this is indeed an important message for both teenagers and their parents. In 2013, over 350 students comprised from Wheeling Park High School (Wheeling, WV), Steubenville Central High School (Steubenville, OH) and Cameron High School (Cameron, WV) witnessed a live action simulated D.U.I. crash scene. The mock crash was immediately followed by a dramatic court room trial. Assisting at the Mock Crash and Trial were the Wheeling Police Department, Wheeling Fire Department, Air Evac Life Team, Kepner Funeral Homes, Ace Garage, Judge John Vavra and Attorneys J. Kevin Flanagan and Shawn Fluharty. More information can be found at gkt.com and facebook.com/BCYLProgram.
