Today here at Willows Hedgehog Rescue we had a call from a lady who had found a dead adult hedgehog in the middle of a field and on the edge of the field four small hoglets.
When we arrived at the call we realised that with the development stage of the hoglets compared to their size they had been without mum or food for some time. A quick check of one of their tummies told the story, what should have been a nice rounded tummy proved to be hollow with skin hanging down. On arrival back at the hospital we also found that their eyes, ears and anus were full of small maggots again an indication of the period of time they have been in serious trouble without mum.
We are working hard on removing the maggots and to start with they have received rehydration fluids rather than the replacement milk which they desperately need but initially it is essential to get them rehydrated in order to be able to cope with having food after a long period without.
