The latest event from writers’ collective 26 was a talk from Controller of Film4, film industry legend and ‘shy genius’, Tessa Ross. Brought to you by writers' collective 26, and sponsored by us.
When Tessa was awarded a BAFTA earlier this year, Danny Boyle introduced her by comparing her to Paul Scholes. At the time, I didn’t get it. But last week, I went to see a charity football match at Old Trafford. Paul Scholes was playing. Every time he got the ball, the whole stadium cheered.
I get it now.
Tessa talks about the history of Film4, her team, how she works with writers and directors and how she spends her budget. We were left with a tangible sense of a ballsy, innovative production house that isn’t afraid to champion the underdog, court the controversial and bend the rules. As Tessa herself puts it, they’re only interested in ‘pleasing some of the audience, some of the time’.
