Commissioned by Artbank for the series 'Performutations' curated by Daniel Mudie Cunningham
Mark Shorter's work was inspired by a recent visit to the Australian War Memorial in Canberra. As he meandered through the museum’s dramatic, spot lit interior he encountered an original WW1 gas mask designed by Canadian doctor Cluny Macpherson in 1915. The ad-hoc aesthetic of this archival object, presented so theatrically, ironically recalled the absurdist masks of the Dadaists at the Cabaret Voltaire thus prompting Shorter to transform such an item from artefact into an animated object of farce.
