We're trying to grow our own food indoors, year-round. A crazy idea, sure, but the first step in Ptarmigan becoming a self-sufficient colony/independent nation. Anyway, we built the windowfarms columns following the instructions on http://our.windowfarms.org as an experiment. Hardcore hydroponic people thumb their noses at vertical systems like this, as 'child's play', but we wanted something fun, low maintenance, taking up little space, and with an aesthetic quality as well.
The excellent local hydroponics shop in Kadriorg (http://www.aquaplant.ee) supplied us with most of what we needed - Grodan/rockwool cubes, nutrients, and pH adjusters (Tallinn water has a high pH). We sprouted a few things in small rockwool cubes (basil, coriander, lettuces, mustard leaves etc.) and transplanted into the windowfarm when the growth appeared. It remains to be seen how practical and useful this will be, but it was fun to build and certainly will brighten up the blue room, once we have some green stuff showing.
