Not commercial, not professional, just learning and trying to make a difference.
This documentary is about dangerous particulate matter downwind of the Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreaton Area (ODSVRA); and what the San Luis Obispo County Air Pollution Control District is doing about it.
Shown are excerpts from the Sept 14,2009 meeting of the San Luis Obispo County Health Commission and an expert panel discussion meeting the next day called "Particulate Matter and Your Health".
Dr. Melanie Marty, Chief of the Air Toxicology and Epidemiology Branch of Cal EPA's Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment defines particulate matter and the serious health threats it poses. Larry Allen, Director of the San Luis Obispo County Air Pollution Control District provides data on the dangerous concentrations of particulate matter in the county, especially on the Nipomo Mesa.
The APCD's second study will be completed by the end of the year. Preparing to deny that off-roading in the ODSVRA it is the source of the dangerous particulate matter downwind, State Parks withheld support for the study and wrote a letter to APCD stating that the study is 'potentially flawed".
Meanwhile, the APCD plans more workshops to inform the public and to help residents protect themselves from the harmful effects of particular matter.
