Description of Project
"Babushka", a 20 minute B&W 16mm film was posted on D2.
Babushka is a dramatic depiction of the mental ills of a small family.
Set in the U.S., but universally depicted, it portrays the limited, closed world of a young woman and the relationship with her mother. Ivana, the central character, takes care of her mother who is mentally incapacitated and requires constant attention from her daughter. The brother, John, visits and leaves Ivana in a state of confusion and fear, an ever-present threat of incest looming over them.
Ivana's hope and yearning is to be rejoined with her dead father, the only source of comfort and joy in her diligently restrained world. She has a terrifying dream which starts this process by bringing her deepest fears to consciousness. Afraid to move out of her present situation, she finally summons her father and breaks out of her excruciating existence on earth.
"Babushka" is a film about fears we struggle to overcome and how love can help us transcend all limitations, physical or spiritual.
