And Antigua Came Through.

For me, leaving Antigua Guatemala after Holy Week it’s always painful. But this year, I can’t complain. Less than a month ago this event was going to be cancelled for the second year in a row. In a show of force, all brotherhoods came together and organized their processions in record time. What a spectacle, what a massive display of faith and penitence. This year masses of masked penitents added a surreal element to the celebration. Stoic faces overcoming adversity and experiencing a deep connection with the heavens.

As I say goodbye, it is time to reflect on the experiences lived. Gone are the painful walks on cobblestone, the endless attires of black, the rites and ceremonies, and the magnificent processions. Entrenched in my heart are the glorious sights of the Andas carrying Jesus and Mary, beacons of light and hope. And embedded in my ears the Funeral marches that provide the solemn cadence for penitents to sway the floats. But by far, what I will miss the most, are my friends and the people of Guatemala. Their kindness, makes you feel like family and that you belong. Can’t wait for next year to once more, walk on the steps of “The Brotherhoods of Time”.
