A glorious Saturday in July, the northern Wisconsin Northwoods RC Flyers held their annual fly-in. I'd never seen these aircraft before and went out to see it and take a few photos. (Didn't realize how big they were.) It turned into a 3-hour love affair that I couldn't leave. Especially had fun with the Navy jet.
This was entirely hand-held with a Canon 5d Mk II and (mostly) a 70-200mm f/2.8 with IS (which made it possible to hand-hold without the shakies). ISO was pumped up to 2000 so I could shoot at a relatively deep depth of field. I pre-set the focus to just under infinity and panned "manually" by aiming the camera at the action. Since watching the LCD screen on a sunny day, and trying to focus on fast action was out of the question, I just depended upon instinct and a whole many years of practice and, by damn, it all came together.
