Since 2009 I made several trips to Gujarat India to study water-culture in a semi arid environment. The main focus so far was on stepwells, a millenia old tradition to reach deep ground water and to store monsoon water. Sadly most stepwells are no longer in use due to safety issues and also because of dropping water tables caused by deep well pumping to accomodate the growing population.Water is sacred in an arid environment, and that is what is expressed in these wonderful pieces of inverse architecture.
Dada Harir vav in Ahmedabad is one of the most beautiful vav's there is, and very accesible.
The research to these stepwells was conducted in collaboration with ourpeopletree architects in Rajkot
