On Oct. 14, 2009, Apple released an update called "Performance Update 1.0" to people with a wide variety of Apple computers.
Despite the fact that this is an update to the operating system (not the firmware), some people claimed this update resolved the issue with the SATA II interface implemented in EFI version 1.7 firmware for mid-2009 13" and 15" MacBook Pros (the ones with the SD card slot).
I am offering this video as evidence that the above is not the case. Please compare what you see here with what I posted 2 months ago regarding the EFI 1.7 issue (vimeo.com/5854152).
The problem with EFI version 1.7 firmware and SATA II capable hard drives is still left unaddressed by Apple.
Update (11/28/09): After replacing my hard drive cable (Apple Part #: 922-9034), I have been unable to get this failure to show up again. I don't want to claim success yet, but it looks pretty good so far.
Note: I believe the video clip used falls under fair use, as its only purpose here is to illustrate the problem at hand in an educational manner.
