Plant(ipod)Installation, is comprised of several plants, which are individually equipped with a responsive playback apparatus. Together, the multiple plant/apparatus hybrids create a technologically enhanced forest, with each individual prosthetic containing an embedded houseplant, a sound system, as well as two short-range sonar detectors, with which to recognize the location of the viewer. The sound component of the work comes from field recordings of both electronic and mechanical noise, and in MAX/MSP the noisy data is convolved with different sound files of breathing. In the rest mode - the exhibition space is filled with sounds suggestive of breath, both of the plants and the technological components. As the viewer moves throughout space and comes into range of the individual plants, the sounds transform into quiet story telling, evoking the theory that plants respond to sound, growing stronger, and healthier.
