This is a true story about a joint effort to restore a population of the endangered Nihoa Millerbird to Laysan atoll in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. Scientists and Hawaiian cultural practitioners worked together to re-establish this population of birds known only to this part of the world. This video tells the history of the islands through rare footage taken in 1923 as well as newspaper stories from the early 1800s. Through pictures and interviews, the translocation project is explained and contemplated upon by community leaders. The success of this project will help with the conservation of more bird species particularly on islands. This video was created for the Nihoa Millerbird Translocation Project by Outside Hawaii and the Malama Learning Center.
