An interview of Jeffrey D. Sachs, Director of The Earth Institute at Columbia University, recorded during the International Conference "An innovative society for the XXI century" held at Paris on July 12 & 13.
Professor Sachs thinks we need to change direction, and as time is really short, the meeting that France will host in 2015 on Global Climate Change is imporant, as well as the current process at the United Nations who set a new development agenda after 2015. He underlines the two process (Climate Change negotiations and the UN negotiation over a new development agenda) can be brought together, and can help to change the direction for the all planet. The challenges we face (how to produce energy, how we use energy, how we ensure greater equality or equity in income distribution, how to ensure jobs for young people, etc.) requiere a new way of thinking. As "it is much harder to be a pioneer then to follow the leader in front of you", that is why "we need pioneers now all over the world".
