This box was particularly creepy. This couple who had heard about my boxes stopped by my apartment to possibly buy one. They wanted it for their kid's room! I said, "I don't think these would be very appropriate." They took one look, winced and left.
These were a series of automata I did in San Francisco back in the day. The boxes were constructed from found wood while the figures were usually made of foam rubber and/or found toy parts. Each was powered by a crank that used a crude system of cams and pistons to animate the characters in the box. When you turn the crank he (sort of) brushes his teeth and taps his foot.
