Can Road safety education be taught through new media? Can students of six years old be engaged for more than ten minutes in a game teaching them how to behave in the city streets?
Way for Life is a story about three little pets lost in the city. They will find their way completing some fun tests about road safety. Tests about orientering, street signals, safety in the car and many others. The story is set in the town in wich the class is. In fact the city backgrounds can be chosen and loaded according to the location requested.
Once in the class the educator registers every student on his iPad, this way he can control the gameplay status of everyone, he can pause single exercises or play them again from a specific one.
Children follow the story, at the end of every episode a tutorial introduces the exercise. At the end of every test unit each student get a score based on right and wrong actions combined with the time needed to complete the test..
The experimental course was delivered to 330 students achieving excellent results. In a final survey 95 percent of children said they liked it very much. Teachers judged innovation, effectiveness and suitability with students age an average of 4.64 points out of 5.
