This scene represents and accurate 'box formation' of B-17 bombers in 1942-43. All bombers shown are at the optimum distances from each other in yards for an ideal box formation. The German fighters found that this formation was most vulnerable from the front, so it was common for them to attack head-on. Designers at Boeing ended up making modifications to the B-17 by adding a chin turret under the nose in the B-17G model, to counter these head-on attacks.
