Dodes directed twin 9-year old girls to stare and pose blankly into the camera, mimicking what they see in fashion advertisements. As the video progresses their hair and makeup become more exaggerated. In post-production, she created a stop-motion animation using hand drawn and sewn, cut-out masks constructed from model’s faces sourced from fashion magazines. Dodes recorded one of the girls singing the “Star Spangled Manner” which she then further manipulated (working with Matt Whyte) and use as the soundtrack for the piece. Through her use of materials, she strategically employs her own version of the feedback loop, creating an eerie and affective portrait of little girls.
