At the tailend of a really great day I decided to follow CN5779 East from North Bend to Kamloops. Little did I know!
Shot the obligatory sequence of the train setting across the Fraser on the Lower Cisco bridge. After that it was off to an untested location at the westend of Thompson.
I waited and I waited. One Westbound ..... and another Westbound ... but 5779 shows up at the same time. Reframe the shot and keep filming. There had been some "on air chatter" about a problem with CN 5779 East but nothing specific.
Well ... in the meantime 5779 decided to quit and the long intermodal had plenty to go before the grade would flatten. The engineer reported "We can't with just 4000hp", time for RTC in Calgary to make a decision. Leave X number of cars on the Thompson siding, secure and then proceed.
It was interesting watching while listening to the back and forth between the engineer and the brakeman. When I saw three guys getting on - crew change at North Bend - I figured one was a trainee (no pun intended!) , but the extra hands must have come in handy (still no pun).
