the Water Ballet is hybrid video of underwater footage and a live dance performance. A tale is told based on a Balinese philosophy: when the body dies, it must travel through the four elements before it reaches the ocean. At this point the soul can finally be released from the bodily confines.
Tulsa Modern Movement (TuMM) performed an interpretation of the life of the soul after death, based on this Balinese belief.
The piece that you see is the end of the series of dances, when the soul has finally reached the ocean. It is met by an underwater environment that is oblivious to any presence. We see the soul be enveloped by the ocean herself.
Footage from Busby Berkeley is projected into the scene, along with other underwater footage directed by Erin Turner. Performed and shot at Living Arts of Tulsa.
