This is the story of the woman in the "Long Black Veil" from the 1959 country ballad, written by Danny Dill and Marijohn Wilkin and originally recorded by Lefty Frizzell. A saga song, "Long Black Veil" is told from the point of view of an executed man falsely accused of murder. He refuses to provide an alibi, since on the night of the murder he was having an affair with his best friend's wife, and would rather die and take their secret to his grave than admit the truth. The chorus describes the woman's mourning visits to his gravesite, wearing a long black veil and enduring a wailing wind.
"Mystery And Secret Sin" is NOT a country song. It does give us the story from the woman's POV as she wanders those hills and visits his grave in her Long Black Veil. Enjoy.
"Mystery And Secret Sin" is my first attempt at a music video. It has flaws, and I will probably go back and fix the wee bit of wobble I couldn't get out at some point. I have made it from stray video clips and photos I've had laying around. The character images portrayed in this piece come from my archive of photos of relatives "no longer whinnying with us". One of these in particular is a disturbing photo of a baby boy named Lucas. It would seem that my ancestors were quite keen on preserving many things in photographic memory. I have many amazing portraits from the late 19th and early 20th century.
Incidentally, these same people are probably all buried in that graveyard (Balsam Grove Cemetery near Oliphant Ontario). This was quite unintentional, as it was just a coincidence that I used their photos and happened to go take some shots in that spot, where I hadn't been in over twenty years. SOOO0-KY!
