Demonstrators took to the streets in Rio de Janeiro soon after Pope Francis’ arrival for the weeklong celebrations of World Youth Day.
On July 22, thousands of people marched near the city palace where the pontiff met earlier with local authorities, including the country’s President Dilma Rousseff and Rio state Gov. Sergio Cabral who have been the target of many violent protests in Rio over the past few weeks.
A mannequin representing the governor, who is accused of being corrupt, was burned.
Other Brazilians cried out against the public cost of the pontiff’s visit, which is estimated between $145 million and $159 million, according to local media.
