"Not in My name" will be a 40 minute documentary film showing an honest and direct portrayal of young Jews in Canada who explore the ways they were taught about Zionism and the implicit silences about Israel/Palestine with which they grew up. With personal risk, they choose to speak.
There are real implications to this film. The government of Canada has historically shown unconditional support of Israel. Among many types of support, Canada has signed free trade and security pacts and supplies critical weapon components for the Israeli military. Canada claims to have the backing of the entire Jewish community in doing so.
"Not in My Name" shows a different reality of Jewish opinion. The people interviewed in this film carefully examine the ways in which they learned and unlearned about Israel/Palestine, and at what point, and how, they began to question and understand the reality of the situation. They look to aspects of their history and culture for inspiration in speaking out. They talk about the difficulty of asking hard questions and the personal costs of doing so- family tensions and loss of certain parts of their community. But, to do so is crucial as great wrongs are committed in their name. To live with silence creates a painful impasse in the community and has detrimental and tragic consequences for Palestinians.
