3 Years of Summer is a project made by Osvald Landmark fellow at Center of Collaborative Arts and Media at Yale University in collaboration with Danilo Rosich.
When Ragnarök is imminent it shall according to the old Nordic myth of apocalypse be known by three 3 years of winter with no summer in between. The old story of Ragnarök is a cautionary tale of how lost connectedness to the natural world will lead to the end of the world in a climate catastrophe. The myth is believed to originate from an actual climate disaster in Iceland year 536 where a volcano blocked out the sun for three years and caused over half the population of Scandinavia to die.
Almost 1500 years later we are today faced by a parallel in history; a different kind of climate apocalypse is looming in the horizon. This time around it will not be known by three years of winter, but rather 3 Years of Summer.
The animation follows the narrative of Ragnarök and is using surveillance footage form the Earth's atmosphere, natural disasters and the birth of the universe.
Soundtrack and animation is by Osvald Landmark. Event was documented by Jisung Park. A big thanks to everyone involved!
