Frannie's Christmas is one of notable animator and director Mike Mitchell's early works at Cal Arts. It was included in "Giant's First Steps" - a program by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, in collaboration with Acme Filmworks' Executive Producer and program curator Ron Diamond which had it's US premier at the annual Marc Davis Lecture in Animation and was the keynote lecture for SIGGRAPH 2013. s2013.siggraph.org/attendees/keynote-session.
For Giants First Steps, Cinelicious scanned the best possible elements at 4K resolution with IR Dirt Map on the Scanity film scanner and provided color grading and 4K DRS Digital Restoration with output to 4K 16-bit TIFF, 4K DCP, 4K UltraHD ProRes and HD Broadcast Masters, as well as 4K 35mm preservation masters and new film prints.
Frannie's Christmas was particularly challenging because the only element in existence was a beat up, magenta skewed 35mm print. The clip above shows a sample of before and after restoration.
