Prison Education Facts
Prison Education Programs focus on increasing the education levels of incarcerated individuals, as well as informing the public of prison conditions. Over 68% of State prison inmates did not receive a high school diploma prior to incarceration. The United States has 5 percent of the world's population, but has 25 percent of the world's prisoners nearly 2.4 million people behind bars. Since 1980, primarily due to the war on drugs and three strikes laws, the prison population has quadrupled, even though violent crime has dropped significantly, (as much as 40%). Prisons cost U.S. taxpayers 46.3 billion dollars per year. Beyond the financial implications, prison education keeps people from going back to prison, which reduces community crime rates. Education, independent of other programs, has been shown to have a significant impact on the behavior of inmates after release.
