Magnet schools were introduced in Hillsborough County Public Schools nearly 25 years ago, largely as a tool for promoting diversity in urban school settings. Since then, the goals--and themes--of the magnet programs have evolved with the times. Today, HCPS and the nation have more magnets than ever. Diversity is still one of the main goals, but now magnets serve many more, including the value of simply offering families real choices. What's next for magnet programs in Hillsborough and the country?
