We're going old school with this video and reaching deep into the archives to showcase the piece. This short is the very first piece I made for public viewing. The video is about my friend Rich Purnell making the first ascent of the disputed M14 endurance climb. "Alcatraz" A climb he had seen back in 1995 but wasn't strong enough to climb it at the time. Alcatraz doesn't form very often so Rich waited patiently for the pillar formed again. Always watching and looking for wet rock during the summer months, till one day he noticed significant seepage from the highway on his drive home from the desert. He immediately began bolting in the fall knowing if the ice would form it wouldn't be there very long. His dream of ten years finally came true when he made the first ascent of this coveted route. "Alcatraz"
I entered this into Mountainfilm in Telluride and to my surprise it was selected for viewing. From there it played in the Banff Mountain Film Festival and several other prestigious festivals around the world. This is the short video that started it all for me. It was this video that gave me the confidence to pursue my dream. Shot on the Panasonic DVX 100A. This is still a favorite of mine to watch.
