“Allegro from 'The Spring' (The Four Seasons)” by Vivaldi.
For several years now while on neighborhood walks, my family and I have been coming upon this most unusual house in Dublin, Ohio. The home owners seemed to put up elaborate outdoor decorations for nearly every holiday: Christmas, Halloween, 4th of July, Memorial Day, Easter, St. Patrick's Day, Thanksgiving, and more. For all this time, I wondered, “Who are these people that live there?”
In the end, I realized that it’s about the spirit of spreading good cheer, color, and a sense of fun throughout the community and neighborhood. Their house decorations were sly extensions of their own selves and personalities. What a fun place to live!
Thinking About the Holiday House Through the Years
Whenever my wife, daughter, and I are on an evening walk through our Dublin, Ohio neighborhood, there’s always this one particular house that sticks out. The residents always elaborately decorate their abode for, what seems to be, every holiday. After a while, I got to calling the place “The Holiday House”. I always got a kick out of seeing their decorations and the jovial fun they brought to the neighborhood. Yet I always wondered, who are the people who take decorating one’s house for each holiday to a new level?
Here's some promo images of a documentary short I'm in post-production editing on called "The Holiday House". While on neighborhood walks over the years, I've been taking photos and video of this most unusual house in Dublin, Ohio for several years now. I finally contacted and did a video interview with the kind and friendly ladies that put up elaborate outdoor decorations for nearly every holiday: Halloween, Christmas, 4th of July, Memorial Day, Easter, St. Patrick's Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and more. It's about the spirit of spreading good cheer, color, and a sense of fun throughout the community and neighborhood. Their house decorations are sly extensions of their own selves and personalities.
"What got you started with setting up decorations around your house?"
"How many holidays do you decorate for?"
"How long have you been doing this?"
"Enjoy the Little Things" - I like and appreciate the simple philosophy/ haiku sayings for the neighborhood.
How This All Got Started
5-28-13: While Lisa, Alyssa, and I were out on an evening stroll around the neighborhood, I spontaneously got the nerve to go up to the front door of the neighbors who live in the "Holiday House". I talked to Linda Macik, who I've seen on resting on her back porch. She and her daughter Sherri do the decorations every holiday. Linda explained that she does the decorations to make people happy. This was a similar message that was in my Artcars documentary. I'm glad I finally got the gumption to ask them if I could do a documentary short on the decorations that they do in our neighborhood. I've been trying to ask them for six months now! It's ridiculous. But at least I now have a new documentary short to work on in the future. I told Linda that I'd probably interview them in June or July sometime. But this would be a nice documentary short as "community outreach" for local film festivals and the Ohio State Fair.
