Launching October 2013
This film focuses upon Yemeni elders who migrated to Sheffield in the post-war period to boost the steel industry. The rise and decline of steel is written deep in the city’s identity, and has irrevocably changed the life stories of these men, bringing them across the globe from British Aden to the foundries of Attercliffe. Their experiences as some of the earliest Arab immigrants to Britain gives insight into their remarkable adaptability and resilience; working in heavy industry with no English, negotiating their Muslim faith with shift work, and splashing out on sharp suits, beer and cigarettes.
Filmed in collaboration with the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Yemeni Community Association.
