My girlfriend and I spent a month working on the Lost Coast of California in a little town called Petrolia. Coincidentally, we ended up working for the Duke Family, who had run into trouble with the government during the Vietnam War and had since moved to California after having lived in Brazil, Alaska, and D.C.

Life was assiduous, exciting, and rich. Routine tasks consisted of tending to the plants and livestock as well as work at a nearby camp. However, other tasks included making apple juice with an old-fashioned press; jamming and preserving cherries, plums, and apples; working with the US Department of Fish and Wildlife at the estuary to collect salmon population data; helping out with weddings; horseback-riding lessons; fruit picking; and cooking. During our free time, we’d drive the ATV to a nearby swimming hole to cool down and read, or we’d take a hike in the King Mountain Range. There was always something to do, and we ended each eventful day by garnering produce from the garden and cooking dinner together.
