Mariah reflects on the creative process.
“Each day my body seems to have its own weather/climate/mood and I create materials that come from the day. In addition my father told me a story about a sparkler dance he and his friend Bob performed for my twin sister and me outside in the middle of the Winter when we were two year olds living without electricity in an Alaskan homesteader log cabin. I almost remember it. I have always marveled at the magic of light – moonlight sparkle on snow, ocean waters changing reflective hue, stars, bubbles floating in the air catching the light.
When I create the materials I imagine myself in darkness illuminated by costume and in part this image informs the Phrases - I am perhaps becoming of light and the choreography is a vehicle for transmitting light to the viewers.” – Mariah Maloney
