“… you will conceive in your womb and will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus”
During Advent the Church looks to the future; but to come to terms with that future, it first looks back, to when the seeds of that future were first sown. In the risen and ascended humanity of Christ, human persons have been enabled to become sharers in the divine nature. But that transformation began when divinity came to share in human nature. The divine Word of God emptied himself, took to himself human flesh and blood, and become human. The mystery is beyond human comprehension, yet it happened in the womb of the young unmarried Jewish woman named Mary.
