Excerpts from the show I co-translated and directed while a guest artist at the University of Hawaii in Spring 2013. The piece is Kishida Rio's "Itojigoku" or "Thread Hell." From the promo material: Thread Hell is playwright and director Kishida Rio's masterpiece of the Japanese avant-garde, or angura, movement. Poetic language and dark imagery weave a tale of female identity and give voice to the women in the textile mills, spinning thread and reinventing their personal histories in opposition to the strings that hold them in place. It was an amazing voyage with an incredible student cast!
