This was a Houdini exercise I did to familiarize myself with the use of instancing and simple particle systems to create a complex scene. I used instancing with a scatter node for both the background trees and the "fireflies" - which are actually simple spheres with a custom glow shader on them (created by my friend Ross Macaluso). I used a particle system with collision detection to drive the movement of the fireflies. The grass was generated with Houdini's off the shelf fur system.

Hopefully at a later point I can add a breakdown of my Houdini set-up to this video, but as of right now my computer and Houdini are not on speaking terms, so I need to fix that first...
