Highlights from 2013 Speedgoat 50K, billed as "the toughest 50K in the US". Once again, the challenge of the course and the prize money brought out a slew of top ultrarunners like Anton Krupicka, Timothy Olson, Sage Canaday and Max King on the men's side and Krissy Moehl, Stephanie Howe and Anita Ortiz on the women's side.
Thanks to a tough field pushing each other on and a cool, overcast day, course records were set by both the men (Sage Canaday) and women (Stephanie Howe).
On a personal note, as a resident of Hermosa Beach I knew I was at a disadvantage going into it coming from sea level (the race has over 11,500 ft of vertical gain and takes place between 7,600 - 11,000 ft). I had trained over the couple of months leading into at places like Mt. Baldy, Gorgonio and Whitney and was proud of my effort that day.
Definitely lived up to its reputation though. Tough, tough race.
