For my Your Big Year interview on culture, I turned to none other than my West Coast hip-hop artist friends, KIDS. They were of course, happy to chat us up and tell us about their big year and what they are doing to support the next generation. Check out what they had to say!
Consisting of Jakub Evolved, Jay Mizz and Kelvin, this collective solidified as a trio in the summer of 2010. Kelvin and Jakub Evolved first met during the making of “Voice of the Streets” a project in early 2008, conducted by Deja and Young Prophecy Enterprises. Jay Mizz and Jakub Evolved linked through MD of the Boomsday Alliance in late 2009. It wasn’t until a couple months before KIDS went on tour, when Mizzy and Kelvin first met at a small hip hop event on Commercial Drive, in East Vancouver.
KIDS have established themselves on an individual level, all hailing from northern Canadian communities. Meeting in Vancouver, the trio united forming a team of unique personalities that shine on a collaborative effort. They’ve toured in Northern Ontario, as well in Winnipeg. Thus far they have recorded a mixtape which will be released this summer, titled “Summer School”. They’ve thrown down at numerous venues in Vancity and its outskirts, such as Abbotsford, Burnaby and New Westminster. They plan to put work in over the summer, performing in the GVRD and Whitehorse, YT. Other material they are currently working on includes “Stereoscope”, an LP focused by Jakub Evolved and Kelvin; as well as an untitled LP by Jakub and Mizz, produced by Ali Dehesh.
KIDS strive to express themselves honestly through quality music. The essence is to present organic sounds with new perspectives. With invigorating live performances, these fellas enlighten listeners with spoken word and flavourful beats. These guys are prolific; these guys are evolutionary. They are Kinetic Intelligence Developing Soul.
