This project was funded by the Los Angeles County Arts Commission's Cultivate/Create Initiative along with donations from individuals and families for a project that will help push forward ongoing support for Tia Chucha's extensive programming, workshops, events, and festivals. We were able to match $10,000 from the Arts Commission with donations through in an IndieGoGo online campaign, from the community at events, and through talks and presentations made around the country by our board president and cofounder, Luis J. Rodriguez. Tia Chucha's Cultivate/Create team included Tia Chucha board members Dolores Villanueva and David R. Diaz, Development Director Ruben Guevara, and grants/technical assistant Walter P. Little in coordination with Tia Chucha's dedicated staff. Tia Chucha's is most grateful to the L.A. County Arts Commission as well as a National Endowment for the Arts grant for Tia Chucha Press, the publishing wing of Tia Chucha's Centro Cultural.
The book published by Tia Chucha Press was edited by Denise Sandoval, Ph.D, of California State University at Northridge, and Luis J. Rodriguez. It includes essays by teachers, leaders, youth activists, artists, poets, and others as well as photos, art images, poems, histories, interviews, and more. It is a 9 x 9 table top book, beautifully designed by Tia Chucha Press's designer Jane Brunette. The film was directed and produced by John F. Cantu, an independent film maker, writer, and editor. The book is distributed by Northwestern University Press.
Tia Chucha's Centro Cultural & Bookstore is the only multi-arts cultural space and trade bookstore in the Northeast San Fernando Valley with workshops in the visual arts, Mexika dance, music (including Son Jarocho Mexican musical tradition), writing, theater, and puppetry, among others. We also present film screening nights, Open Mics, author readings, art exhibits, healing workshops, indigenous cosmology, and community dialogues. We host the only annual outdoor literacy, arts and performance festival in the San Fernando Valley with the vital assistance of L.A. City's Department of Cultural Affairs, the "Celebrating Words Festival".
