One of the projects I was tasked with completing while interning at the Design Council was to create a piece of original digital content that showcased the Design Council's Future Pioneers. I decided to piece together a series of photos I had taken at the New Designers exhibition in July 2013, where the Future Pioneers were announced, and to try and convey the day, and the awards, in a new light. I wanted to capture the mix of activity from student designers enthusiastically showing off their work, to the expert panel of judges finding their favourites, right through to the evening reception where the excited winners were announced.
I decided to use a stop-motion technique to capture the day as it unfolded. The video follows the narrative of the event, giving a taster of the exhibition and building anticipation as it progresses. As all the content gathered was static it was important constantly surprise the viewer through the changing pace. For example, the winning projects are allowed some breathing space, whereas setting up for the awards evening is a whirlwind of flatpack boxes and glittering jelly.

I hope the film has managed to capture the tangible excitement of the day, and celebrate the new talent discovered at this year’s New Designers.
