As we continue our study on the book of Proverbs, let us review where we have reached. In our introduction, we noted that Proverbs is divided by most scholars into 9 distinct sections or literary units. Seven of these units possess a superscription or title that is imbedded within the original text itself and marks the beginning of a new literary unit.
The first title is located in 1:1 and begins the book of Proverbs with these words, “The Proverbs of Solomon, son of David, king of Israel.” This first unit includes all of chapters 1-9.
The second title imbedded in the text is found right before 10:1. It says, “The Proverbs of Solomon.” This second unit includes all the proverbs from 10:1 to 22:16.
