Between 6:00am on Sunday 28th July and 7:00am Friday 2nd August 2013, 1000 riders cycled from London to Edinburgh and back again as part of Audax UK's (aukweb.net) largest ever event. Each rider checked in at a series of 'controls' between London and Edinburgh where they were able to eat, rest and sleep. The time at which each rider checked in was recorded.
From these times this visualization was produced showing the progress of the riders over the 5 days. The height of each bar shows the number of riders at that particular point in space and time. Where there are more than 50 riders at the same point (usually at controls), the number is symobolised with a circle. Some predictive modelling was used to estimate how long each rider spent at each control.
Some trends to spot include: fewer riders on the road at night; slower riders spending less time sleeping and leaving nighttime controls earlier than faster riders; cyclists leaving controls together in groups; more nighttime riding on the first night than subsequent ones; highest demand at controls at Pocklington on Sunday night, Brampton on Tuesday night and Market Rasen on Thursday night.
