The sweet reward of fresh honey is by no means the only reason folks are attracted to beekeeping. Honey bees are remarkable and critically important creatures. Bees have always been one of man’s best friends, but the relationship between the two species has taken a particularly ominous turn. Many species of bee and other pollinating insects, including butterflies, have experienced sharp declines in recent decades. Beekeepers first sounded the alarm about disappearing bees in 2006. Simply healthy bees were abandoning their hives en masse, never to return.
