Full Length Obituary (by Rachael Fietelson Downs and friends):
Tamara Eden Langwell was born in Oklahoma, but was raised and passed away in San Antonio July 25, 2013.
From January 9, 1973, Tamara never met a cat she did not like. Her love for animals was inevitable. Growing up, Tamara was surrounded by a constant menagerie of animals, including cats, dogs, birds and countless other critters. Her childhood home pool was converted to host a goldfish pond that served as a refuge to ducks, turtles and toads. Her current home was a cat’s paradise.
Tamara attended Madison High School and received her masters at the University of North Texas. Tamara was an extremely bright cheerful person, always making people laugh, but like her father, was inclined to mischief…like buying and using a stuffed animal squirrel purse for everyday use (including work days), the occasional girls night or popping fireworks in city streets…no one ever uttered a peep.
Her colleagues and classmates, now in New York, Kansas, Seattle and all across Texas would describe her as talented, wonderful, sweet and amazing. Tamara worked for the City of San Antonio’s public art program for the past ten years. In that time she contributed greatly to many capital improvement projects, oversaw various artist selection processes, coordinated public art presentations and design reviews for the Public Art Board and other Committees. She assisted thousands of artists from here in San Antonio and all over the United States. Tamara treasured her work with the public art program, especially her time working with fellow public art staff and coworkers throughout the organization, including the Department for Culture and Creative Development, the Capital Improvements Management Services Department and many other departments, agencies and consultants she interacted with regularly throughout her professional career.
Her friends and colleagues thought of her often and fussed over her, to Tamara’s dismay. She never wanted to be the center of attention or cause any burdens, nevertheless, valued her precious connections with friends and family.
We will dearly miss Tamara’s intellect, good natured irreverence, kindness, empathy for others & willingness to try anything, no matter how crazy it sounded. Her soul was like no other and will always be cherished. She will be remembered for her contributions to the San Antonio Art programs, KLRN, Blue Star and countless other causes.
In lieu of flowers, we kindly ask that donations be given to the Animal Defense League of San Antonio. In the comment section we ask you write “In Memory of Tamara E. Langwell”.
