TRANS-FORMATIONS: A BRILLIANT AND DARK REMIX EVENT
Directed and curated by Ellen Southern
The Others, London, 21st October 2012
Ellen Southern’s call to ‘remix’ her composition Of The Brilliant and The Dark was answered by a diverse range of emerging creative practitioners; from composers, songwriters and electronic musicians to movement, performance and visual artists. The result was Trans-Formations, a remix event, or mini one-night-arts-festival.
Over 20 artists created distinctive new works which were debuted at this live event. The evening opened with a performance of Southern’s Of The Brilliant And The Dark, a song cycle for vocal ensemble, including Ellen O’Driscoll and Holly Anne Rolfe (voices), Adel Sahnoun (flute) and Alex Scaturro (double bass).
All resulting work carries a creative commons licence, adding to a wealth of copyleft cultural works which encourage creativity, fair use and collaboration. For those interested in artist-lead multidisciplinary and collaborative work, this event remains an inspiring insight into a wide range of creative processes - revealing exciting contrasts, and the subtle connecting threads of shared inspiration…
Of The Brilliant And The Dark was composed by Ellen Southern in response to an invitation by artists Eileen Simpson and Ben White to create a creative commons licensed manuscript remixing the original 1969 score The Brilliant And The Dark for a creative commons sharealike 3.0 project at the Women’s Library in 2010.
