An appeal to keep and bear arms by cautioning that the focus on the US Homicide Rate distracts from the far worse natural hazard of genocide, which is a major cause of human misery enabled by gun control.
When data is spread across multiple pages in multiple formats the intellectual task is to remember what you saw in one place, and try to understand how that relates to a different set of data, which, even if it lays right before your eyes, is by itself, challenging to comprehend. I have created a set of data-rich pictures that join statistics from initially disparate sources so that we can see how they relate to one another in a single-eyespan in order to aid reasoning about this topic.
None of the data is my original research. I simply rendered ordinary data from ordinary sources, e.g., United Nations, FBI, CA DOJ, into pictures. Some of the data sources are academic or jornalistic. Obviously the organizations that compile, or otherwise develop, source data, must make thousands of decisions that affect the outcome of the data. Nonetheless I am given to believe that the source data is essentially unbiased and I have done nothing to undermine that characteristic.
Links to the original data sources are available below. I took care to ensure the data symbols are sized to be visually correct. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bubble_chart#Choosing_bubble_sizes_correctly
Likewise, other symbols used to represent numbers were sized as cautiously and honestly, right down to the level of individual pixels. While the video rendering process has changed the actual pixels, the proportion is what matters and that remains perfect.
Also, data sources are often incomplete, or in various ways, not automatically compatible. For example, the UN was unable to report statistics for murder for every country in the same year. The base year is 2011 but when the only available statistic was available from earlier years, I used the latest available statistic. Another example concerns standardized crime reporting in the US; most states report to the FBI, which compiles descriptive statistics, but Alabama does not submit statistics to the FBI, so I had to obtain them separately. Nonetheless, none of these challenges have made the data unfit for use, nor has my use of this data compromised their validity. Any affects, if any, are so trivial as to be meaningless, and have had no meaningful impact on how the pictures represent the data.
OPINIONS & CONCLUSIONS
None of the people or organizations that supplied the data have endorsed me, or the video. All of the opinions and conclusions are mine.
The design of this video was inspired by Edward Tufte, the King of Information Design. Even the channel name is an homage to Mr. Tufte, who invented sparklines. edwardtufte.com/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg?msg_id=0001OR What I remember best about the one day course he taught was the morality embedded in good information design: Do no harm to the data, make comparisons to aid understanding, be honest, be compelling, and much much more. While I know I lived up to the moral expectations, I hope Mr. Tufte will forgive me for my shortcomings at visual perfection. Despite this, I hope he can take some satisfaction in my work as one of his disciples and ardent fans.
