The baby porcupine, called a porcupette (female) or porcupet (male), will nurse for four months, an amazing amount of time by rodent standards. This huge investment of time by the mother accounts for the high survival rate of baby porcupines through their first summer and fall. Although this scene was shot during the day, most nursing takes place at night. While this video contains no audio, baby and mother porcupines may “sing” to each other in a responsive way during nursing.
