This is the ASAB video to go with the undergraduate resource: Vigilance Behaviour in Barnacle Geese. To obtain a copy of the free teachers notes to go with this video - please email the ASAB education officer at the following email address: email@example.com
The video you are about to watch will involve you in a study of the vigilance behaviour of barnacle geese grazing in winter. You will observe twenty one sequences of the behaviour of geese in flocks, which range in size from 1 to 20 birds.
After the exercise you will:
1. understand the importance of defined categories of behaviour and obtain experience in recording the frequency and duration of defined behaviours;
2. understand the trade-off between feeding and vigilance;
3. understand the advantage of group feeding in reducing vigilance costs.
