The aptly named Splendid fairy-wren is found in the southern half of Australia from WA to western NSW. On the east coast it is replaced by the closely related Superb Fairy-wren. The bright blue bird is a male in full breeding plumage, also a male is shown in eclipse and finally the dull female. Male fairy wrens usually have a number of females, which they defend from the attention of other males. Mind you the females apparently go elsewhere from time to time!
