"Voices" are brief capsules collected during our fieldwork among descendants of Spanish immigrants in the US.
"This was in the thirties, and that's when my mother went to work at the canneries. She went to work there and pack fish. And two of the canneries I know that she worked in was Cal-Pac and San Xavier. The one I remember the most was the San Xavier. But in the summer months, she would work at the Del Monte Hotel, which was a big resort. The big resort – very fancy, very well-known throughout the world. And actually we lived very close to there, so she could walk to work. So she worked as a maid. When the canneries weren't working she worked as a maid at the Del Monte Hotel."
