"Voices" are brief capsules collected during our fieldwork among descendants of Spanish immigrants in the US.
"My grandfather was asked, by one of the founding fathers of the Basque Club to also be a founder. My grandfather at the time was 16. And he refused, because he did not feel that he was old enough, nor mature enough to be a founder. The other founders of course were older, by a good 15 or 20 years. Valentín Aguirre had asked him to be a founder. He was one of the 13 founders – a very prominent man. I never really met him, because he died when I was two years old or something like that so I really didn't know him. His son, Peter, was actually my dad's best man. So my family knew the Aguirre family, even though we're not related, even though we have the same last name. There's no relationship, you know."
